Henbury Hall: First grey squirrels in Britain

Henbury Hall holds the dubious honour of being the introduction point for the grey squirrel in Britain, leading to the erradication of the red squirrel across much of Britain. The first animals were released here in 1876 by the house’s owner, a  local silk manufacturer named Thomas Unett Brocklehurst who had reputedly imported a pair of the animals from the USA. Perhaps we should call them Brocklehurst squirrels.
